Thirty pounds of cocaine were seized at the UN’s mail center in New York last week. Chief NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says the drug was in a white bag masquerading as a diplomatic pouch and stamped with a version of the UN logo: pouches bearing the UN logo aren't meant to be inspected in the mail center. However, this forged example lacked the normally printed words "United Nations" and "Diplomatic Mail," prompting suspicion and further investigation. The coke was found stashed in bags hidden inside 14 hollowed-out notebooks. The DHL shipment came from Mexico City via Cincinnati, and unsurprisingly bore no return address."There is nothing to indicate that this had anything to do with anybody at the United Nations," says Gregory B. Starr, UN undersecretary-general for safety and security.
