Introduction and Basic Services

Montecatini Eating Disorder Treatment Center was founded in 1991 in scenic Carlsbad, California, a coastal city just north of San Diego. The organization offers substance detox, residential and outpatient treatment to adult and adolescent women struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring disorders, including substance abuse, bipolar, ODC, anxiety, depression, self-harm and borderline personality.

Facility and Meals

Located in a suburban area of Carlsbad, the residential treatment facility is a 4,000 square foot home bordering the La Costa Country Club golf course. The house has a total of six bedrooms, each with two twin beds to accommodate a total of 12 women. The living room has large plush couches, a TV and fireplace. The house has both an indoor and outdoor dining areas and a sitting area on the roof with an outdoor fireplace, couch and chairs. The house also has a beautiful garden with areas for yoga and outdoor group meetings. The facility has a full kitchen comes equipped with modern appliances and a small sitting area.

Montecatini focuses a great deal on teaching residents proper nutrition and how to prepare their own healthy meals. There is an on-site chef who prepares healthy meals from a menu prepared by the organization’s nutritional staff. If residents do not eat their full meal, they are required to drink a meal-replacement beverage or their exercise and recreation time gets cut.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Incoming clients must be at least 16 years of age and both medically and mentally stable before entering into treatment at Montecatini. Clients who are experiencing mild withdrawal symptoms can detox at Montecito under the around-the-clock care of Montecatini’s nursing staff. However, clients who are likely to have complications or need ongoing medication are referred to an outside detox provider.

The residential program is individually tailored and generally runs from 40 to 60 days. In addition to group and individual therapy, Montecatini utilizes a variety of treatment techniques including CBT, DBT and relapse prevention. The organization also uses expressive arts therapy and exposure therapy. Clients in the residential program have three individual meetings a week.

Clients begin their day at 6:30 am with breakfast and meal preparation followed by a walk on the beach, yoga or gardening. From 10 am to 12:30 pm, clients participate in group, individual therapy or spirituality sessions, lunch, and then group and individual therapy again in the afternoon. In the evenings, Montecatini offers AA meetings, art expression, game night and free time until lights out at 10:30 pm during the week and 11 pm on the weekends.

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) meets from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm Mondays through Saturdays. Although the length of this program is dependent on the needs of the client, the PHP usually runs between 30 to 90 days for clients. This program can either be a step-down from the residential program or clients can enter it directly when they begin treatment. The treatment is very similar to the residential program with clients participating in group and individual therapy throughout the day. Adult clients attend one individual meeting a week, and adolescent clients attend these meetings twice a week. Clients in the PHP are served two meals and two snacks each day.

Montecatini also offers morning, afternoon and evening Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) that meet four hours a day, Mondays through Saturdays. Like the PHP, the program length is individualized, but usually runs 30 to 90 days total. The IOP treatment features group and individual therapy similar to the residential program, but also includes discharge planning. Clients are served a meal once a day during their treatment time.

The programs utilize experiential therapy where clients apply their new coping skills in real world situations such as grocery shopping, beach trips, restaurant outings, clothes shopping and challenge food outings. Montecatini offers nutritional counseling, exposure therapy and restaurant visits to help clients address triggers. The organization has a registered dietitian who helps lead these groups. Snacks are also offered throughout the day and clients are encouraged to eat without learning the food’s caloric content.

Family group therapy is provided to clients in both the adult and adolescent programs. Adolescent clients are required to have a family group meeting once a week and adult clients have the option. Montecatini also offers a support group for family and friends of current clients. This group meets on the first Wednesday of every month between 6 pm to 7 pm.

Montecatini has a staff of 40 that includes MFTs, LCSWs, Medical Directors, registered nurses, registered dieticians, primary therapists and a therapy dog. The organization also offers mental health treatment and medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders and a full medical staff that includes registered nurses, doctors and physician assistants.

Bonus Amenities

Montecatini also offers transitional living for clients in the outpatient program in several homes in a quiet neighborhood in Carlsbad. The organization provides clients living in these houses transportation to and from treatment.
