Introduction and Basic Services

Malibu Beach Recovery Center is based in its namesake, the iconic town of Malibu, California, located in the foothills of the adjoining canyon off Pacific Coast Highway. The organization offers residential treatment and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which includes the option of a sober living facility,as well as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), all of which are gender-specific. Focus is also given to a host of co-occurring issues, including psychiatric, personality and eating disorders.

Facility and Meals

There are three separate areas at the Malibu Beach Recovery Center, each catering to a specific purpose or gender. A three-to-seven-day long detox takes place at Brentwood House, a calming, villa-like environment with comfortable furnishings and brightly lit two-person or private rooms. Brentwood House has a media center, a gourmet kitchen and its own yoga studio. Meals are specially geared towards those going through the detox process and served in a group setting, where residents can give each other support and encouragement. Focus is given to medication, with clinical attention to things like sleep patterns and holistic therapies.

After detox, or in cases that do not require it, women are treated at the Latigo House while men receive care at the Corral Canyon House. Bedrooms are shared in order to fight the desire for isolation, but each room is individually decorated with queen-size beds and private bathrooms. Each house also features TVs, commercial kitchens, dining rooms, pools, steam rooms and stone fireplaces.

Three meals are offered a day, prepared by the facility’s gourmet chefs. Meals are low-glycemic and omit sugar, caffeine and simple carbohydrates in favor of nutrient-rich foods that help to regulate dopamine levels—a common problem among those with addictions.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Clinical therapies offered at the Malibu Beach Recovery Center include DBT, CBT and RMT, the latter focusing on recovery through neuroscience and behavioral techniques. Group sessions sometimes implement 12-step recovery principles. There is also focus given to nutrition and meditation as well as developing wellness and healthy lifestyle skills. The PHP is available for those who need more intensive care than the outpatient program but do not require intensive 24/7 oversights.

There is a high staff-to-client ratio: one-to-three during the day and one-to-six at night, ensuring individualized attention.

The Malibu Beach Recovery Center’s gender-specific program acknowledges that women often face a great deal of shame and guilt at having faced addiction, and also addresses that many women face trauma as well as a host of co-occurring disorders including domestic violence, abuse, anxiety or depression. For men, focus is on anger and aggression management, emotional isolation, feelings of false masculinity and relationship or sexual issues in addition to treatment of any co-morbid disorders.

Though schedules vary throughout the three houses, the detox program begins at 7:30 am with an inspirational session before breakfast at 9:15 am leading into two seminars on self-care and 12-step skills, followed by lunch at 12:30 pm and then group work and some free time. After lunch residents once again embark on a number of group sessions or 12-step work, followed by dinner at 5:30 pm, a daily movie showing at 7:30 pm.There isan evening reflection time and free time and finally an 11 pm lights out time. Interspersed throughout the week are individual sessions with a client’s psychiatrist, internist and therapist. Individual sessions are held twice a week.

Inpatient schedules are similar, with a 7 am wake up followed by a fitness session, breakfast at 8:30 am, 12-step or adjunctive therapy meetings, lunch at 12:30 pm, either outings or group work until dinner at 5:30 pm and additional 12-step meetings and an evening reflection before some evening free time and lights out at 11 pm. Like the detox programs, these too involve a weekly clinical meeting and two individual sessions per week.

The outpatient program runs Monday through Friday, beginning at 9 am with recovery skills groups, continuing with process and spirituality groups or DBT and ending with a mindfulness or transformation session that goes until noon. Focus in outpatient care is on clinical therapy, a psycho-spiritual program based on the 12 steps and group meetings, as well as a yoga-based exercise program, which includes DVDs of each session and a 30-minute post-treatment regimen.

Family therapy is held once a week.

Before returning home each client works with a counselor to develop a post-discharge plan, which includes working out housing, treatment and locating resources for recovery support systems.

Bonus Amenities

Massage is available and yoga, mindfulness training, breath work and personal training are integrated into treatment. Also offered are art, movement, equine and music therapy as well as cooking classes.

Alumni are provided with numerous connections and resources for relapse prevention and continued addiction awareness and psychoeducation.
