Famed tattoo artist and reality TV star Kat Von D, aka Katherine von Drachenberg, hit a special milestone last week, and announced the good news on Instagram.

On July 7th, Von D posted a picture herself on the social media website with the caption: “Today I celebrate 10 years of sobriety.”

Von D had previously struggled with drinking, but decided to change up her act when it began to interfere with her work. She told Rosie O’Donnell on The Rosie Show, “I’m a pretty disciplined person, but I had made a promise to myself that if there was ever anything in the way of my ability to tattoo that I would cut it out. When I realized that drinking was getting in the way, I woke up one day and said I don’t want to drink anymore, and it stuck.”

Von D dropped her friends that weren’t sober, “I had to deal with the fact that my phone doesn’t ring anymore.” But she also said, “Now I hang out with people who are on the same frequency [as me].”

Since getting sober, Von D saw many areas of her life change for the better. As she previously told The Fix, “Personally, being sober means that I operate better and I function better; I believe I am meant to be that way. If anybody out there feels that they relate to me in any capacity and happen to be struggling, perhaps I can lead by example by showing that if I can do it, you can do it too.”

Looking back on when she finally decided to stay sober, Von D added, “I really never imagined I would be excited about being sober. When you are on the other side of things, you have such a profoundly different perspective on life…it’s something to be celebrated. That doesn’t mean that I think I should get a pat on the back about my sobriety anniversary…I don’t want to get extra credit for doing my homework.”

Nevertheless, her Instagram post inspired her fans, and many others shared their sobriety anniversaries as well. One fan wrote, “3 years and 2 months for me. It’s fun to wake up hangover free.”
