Robert Todd Harrell, the bassist of popular rock band 3 Doors Down, has voluntarily entered rehab at an undisclosed treatment facility since his drinking led to a fatal car crash over the weekend. Police say Harrell was drunk and speeding in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday night, when he clipped another vehicle causing it to overturn, killing the driver, Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr.. The 41-year-old bassist was taken into custody for vehicular homicide while under the influence, and released on Tuesday on $100,000 bond. "He was released on bond and immediately went and checked himself into treatment," says Nashville criminal defense lawyer Ed Ryan. After Friday's accident, police say Harrell was confused and failed a series of field sobriety tests. He admitted to taking prescribed Lortab and Xanax, and drinking hard cider earlier in the evening—though a breathalyzer test showed he had no alcohol in his system. Harrell initially refused to give a blood sample because he was afraid he had narcotics in his system, but police were able to obtain a sample via court order. The musician was also arrested for a DUI in 2012, and for public intoxication in 1999. He is due in court next month, where he faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide by intoxication, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, violation of the implied consent law and possession of contraband. 3 Doors Down has canceled four of their upcoming appearances out of respect for the victim’s family.
