Republican senator and potential 2016 presidential candidate Ted Cruz has admitted to smoking marijuana as a teenager, but declares the experience a “mistake.”

The Texas senator and potential 2016 presidential candidate declared his past pot use in response to an article by the UK’s Daily Mail, which asked 10 Republicans considering a run for the White House if they had used marijuana in their lifetime.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson stated, “Teenagers are often known for their lack of judgment, and Senator Cruz was no exception. When he was a teenager, he foolishly experimented with marijuana, and he’s never tried it since.” Cruz has been an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama’s stance on marijuana, especially in regard to allowing the sale of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington state.

“The Obama administration’s approach to drug policy is to simply announce that across the country, it is going to stop enforcing certain drug laws,” he told Reason. “I would suggest that should concern anyone, because the idea that the president simply says criminal laws that are on the books, we’re going to ignore [them]. That is a very dangerous precedent."

For the record, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and surgeon Ben Carson did not respond to the article inquiry, while representatives for former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, real estate magnate Donald Trump, and Texas Governor Rick Perry stated that their candidates-to-be had never used marijuana.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul all offered oblique responses. A spokesperson for Rubio sent a link to an interview with Rubio in which he dismisses questions about his pot use as “irrelevant” while adding, “If I tell you that I haven’t, you won’t believe me.”

The presumed Republican frontrunner, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, made news last week when he admitted to his own pot use in an interview with the Boston Globe prior to the Daily Mail’s questions. “I drank alcohol and I smoked marijuana when I was at [Phillips Academy in] Andover,” he said. “It was pretty common.”
