Rick Santorum: went to college, too

After his surprise Iowa success—an atom-splitting second place behind Mitt Romney—a newly energized Rick Santorum is back on the campaign trail. Which means desperately trying to dodge controversy. At a college pit stop in New Hampshire yesterday, the youthful audience pressed Santorum on social issues. He was asked to explain the apparent hypocrisy of the Republican love of unbridled states’ rights—which ends when it comes to sticky issues like medical marijuana and gay marriage. Santorum was booed when he morally equated gay marriage to polygamy. Then he was asked for his views on medical marijuana. After referring to pot as a narcotic—eliciting more boos, heckles and hisses—he made the candid admission, “I don’t know my medical marijuana laws very well.” Santorum went on to call marijuana a hazard to society. Asked to clarify, he retorted, “I form that opinion from my own life experiences and having experiences. I went to college, too.”
