In an interview with Britain’s Grazia magazine, Hole frontwoman Courtney Love said that she was forever grateful for the role friend Gwyneth Paltrow played in helping her kick an addiction to the ADHD medication, Adderall.
Love was addicted to the drug in 2011 when she was having problems with her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, and sent a string of unintelligible emails that prompted Paltrow to intervene.
"I was a mess. I needed to get off it,” Love said. “Some crazy psychiatrist told me I needed it and I was writing all these crazy long emails and no one could understand what I was on about. I was alienating my friends.”
"Gwyneth believed in me, she is a stalwart and I sent her a crazy email and all I got back was, 'Are you OK for cash and lawyers?' I didn't answer for three days and that was when I kicked Adderall,” she said. "It took me a week to kick - it wasn't 'Trainspotting'-hard but it was psychological. I had a lot of sex.”
Of course, Love has been no stranger to addiction and has battled one form or another for her entire adult life. She was addicted to heroin in the early 1990s, attempted suicide in 2004 by trying to jump off Lenny Kravitz’s roof, and made numerous appearances in public intoxicated.
Though she was hooked on Adderall in 2011 when she claimed to be sober, Love has managed to stay relatively clean since the mid-2000s.
