A new film directed by noted cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Brokeback Mountain, Argo) shows in stark reality what goes on inside the mind of someone suffering from eating disorders.
Starring Elle Fanning, Likeness draws its inspiration from Prieto’s daughter, Ximena, who herself suffered from anorexia. "It is extremely hard and extremely traumatic to go through that as a family," Prieto said in an interview with Creative Online last spring. "Ximena is my creative consultant on this project. This was a good opportunity to deal with it and help us understand our feelings about it." Though initially uncertain his daughter would be comfortable being part of a project that hit so close to home, Prieto said that she was enthusiastic about the project and collected numerous photographs from various fashion magazines that served as inspiration for her father’s disturbing cinematography.
The film made its debut earlier in the year at the Tribeca Film Festival and has been available for viewing on YouTube since December 11th, but be forewarned that it contains some rather disturbing images. Likeness marks Prieto’s debut as a director, while his latest work as a cinematographer came in collaboration with Martin Scorsese on The Wolf of Wall Street.
