Cliffside Malibu Outpatient
Introduction and Basic Services
Since 2004, Cliffside Malibu has been a trusted name in addiction treatment. With simple beginnings as a male-only sober living house in a beautiful beachside Malibu residence, Cliffside Malibu is now a full network of treatment services for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. While it is perhaps most well known for the inpatient program that developed from its original sober living facility, Cliffside Malibu also offers detox, outpatient programming, aftercare and sober living. There are three different homes dedicated to sober living, also near the meditative waters and healing sands of Zuma Beach. The outpatient treatment is available at another Malibu facility and will soon be offered just over the hill in the San Fernando Valley’s Sherman Oaks. The Sherman Oaks outpatient program will welcome clients in a modern, high-rise building close to a major freeway for easy access starting December 1, 2017. In terms of aesthetics and design, both outpatient facilities honor the Cliffside trademarks of comfort, serenity and privacy.
The outpatient programming at Cliffside upholds the core treatment approaches facilitated in its inpatient care. The team utilizes evidence-based practices such as CBT and Stages of Change but also incorporates peer support and holistic elements. The biggest difference between residential and outpatient is the client’s ability to return to his or her own home or a safe sober living each day when treatment is complete. The outpatient division of Cliffside Malibu is a viable alternative for people who are wary of residential treatment because they are not willing to relinquish personal or professional obligations while seeking help for substance abuse or a dual diagnosis—whether it’s a busy executive or a full-time parent. The staffs at the Malibu outpatient facility and soon-to-open Sherman Oaks outpost are willing to work with each person to devise an individualized treatment plan that fits their unique goals and needs.
Treatment Protocol and Team
The outpatient program in Cliffside’s Malibu facility offers group therapy every day, from 9 am to 9 pm, with four different three-hour sessions available at 9 am, 12 pm, 3 pm and 6 pm. As previously mentioned, each client works with his or her therapist and case manager to develop an individualized program. Group schedules vary but most clients can expect individual therapy at least twice a week. The Sherman Oaks facility will offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that includes at least one individual session a week, and options for groups both day and night. If a client is in need of detox prior to beginning the program, detox services are also available through the Cliffside network. It also offers specialized detox and treatment for opioid dependency.
Cliffside takes an extremely personal approach to treatment. Adhering to the philosophy that there is no one-size-fits-all method for getting someone into recovery, the treatment team conducts an in-depth assessment of the incoming client. From there, Master’s-level therapists and drug and alcohol counselors generally execute the Stages of Change model. Stages of Change was developed about 20 years ago as a strategy for mental health practitioners to identify the most effective way to encourage clients struggling with addictive tendencies to modify their behavior. The “stages” are precontemplation, contemplation, determination, action, maintenance and termination. Seeing as how individuals can be in any one of these phases depending on their history, current state of usage and the drug or behavior with which they’re struggling, it makes sense that both the frequency and subject of group sessions are different for each person.
While most group sessions are rooted in CBT, clients attending Cliffside’s outpatient programming can also expect psychoeducation and relapse prevention techniques, as well as learning skills for better communication and healthy relationships.
The Cliffside Malibu staff includes medical doctors, Master’s-level therapists, LMFTs, LCSWs and drug and alcohol counselors. If desired, clients can also have access to holistic specialists such as acupuncturists, yoga instructors, meditation teachers and massage therapists.
Family therapy and family programming can also be incorporated. In fact, if requested, family members can take a very active role in the client’s treatment. Every Saturday, Cliffside hosts a family program to offer education and guidance to the loved ones of clients in treatment. Facilitated by clinical and program directors as well as the on-staff doctors and therapists, the comprehensive family program is one of Cliffside’s many assets.
In terms of aftercare, Cliffside has a pretty sizeable alumni program and continues to serve as a resource to former clients. The treatment team works with each client to design an aftercare plan that can be executed in their own community, whether it’s continued therapy or connection with a peer support recovery group. Cliffside does not necessarily facilitate or make 12-step a core part of its curriculum but it does encourage participation in AA/NA or other community-minded fellowships. If 12-step does not appeal to someone, his or her case manager and therapist can help with exploring other options like SMART Recovery, Celebrate Recovery, Women in Sobriety or Refuge Recovery.
Holistic treatment and experiential therapies are some of the hallmarks of a luxury-level rehab facility and Cliffside Malibu certainly delivers in this regard. Luckily, outpatient clients are also able to take advantage of some of these amenities too. They can participate in both art and music therapy. Additionally, yoga, acupuncture, personal training and meditation can be facilitated through Cliffside. Clients can also consult with a nutritionist to determine the best dietary plan for optimal recovery.
Cliffside Malibu is considered one of the best treatment facilities in the country, and its outpatient programs uphold its reputation as a trusted resource for men and women struggling with substance abuse, chemical dependency or co-occurring mental health issues. The Sherman Oaks location is planning to offer extensive flexibility in terms of what insurance plans it accepts, so outpatient clients are essentially getting the “luxury experience”—meaning the highest quality of care, facilitated by the top professionals in the field—at a very reasonable, in-network rate.
For someone seeking help with a substance or behavior that’s slowly ruining their quality of life, Cliffside Malibu offers a structured outpatient plan that employs evidence-based therapy and practical, compassionate strategies for getting well. Being able to return home each night and maintain day-to-day life responsibilities while getting help is an added advantage to going to rehab in an outpatient setting. Cliffside Malibu treats its clients like family, and truly goes above and beyond to ensure each person has the tools and support needed to flourish in recovery.
