Introduction and Basic Services
Tucked inside of the Anschutz Medical Campus of the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, Colorado, CeDAR supports clients from detox to residential treatment and then from outpatient to aftercare. The doors were first opened by the CeDAR Medical Center in 2005 and the medical staff has been updating and improving their techniques to provide the best possible recovery options since. Attachment to a hospital gives clients a more comprehensive approach to recovery.

Facility and Meals
As privacy is of the utmost importance to staff of CeDAR, the campus is beautifully enclosed and surrounded by tranquil gardens and private buildings so residents wander freely without sacrificing anonymity.
Staff members also know the importance of nutrition. As such, each client has full access to a nutrition consultant to discuss goals and a new approach. The large dining hall serves three full meals daily. This facility accommodates food preferences or allergies while in treatment. In keeping with the philosophy to treat the whole person, caffeine is restricted for residents of the Intensive Residential Treatment Program.
Full capacity for the residential facility is 50 beds. For the Residential Extended Care Program, 78 beds is the maximum. While there are no private rooms available at CeDAR, there is a very liberal visitor policy of three visitors at a time with up to six in one day.
There is a campus gym for residents to use during scheduled training times with the on-staff exercise physiologists. The entire campus is tobacco free. This facility treats residents 18 years old and older only. Cell phones are prohibited during the first 31 days of treatment. There are TVs available in the community room for residents at the facility after 60 days of care. However, for residents in the first 31 days of treatment, there is no access to TV.

CeDAR offers a full scope treatment options for whatever stage of recovery the client is addressing. There is a choice of 31 to up to 120 days of residential care broken up into two parts—a 31- day intensive residential treatment followed by 60 to 120 days of residential extended care. If there is a clinical need to remain at the facility beyond 120 days, this is allowed on a case-by-case basis, but residents are encouraged to step into more responsibility and back into his/her life after the 120 days.
All inpatient programs have group therapy daily and individual therapy at least once a week. Clients enrolled in the outpatient program have those therapies three times a week. Couples and family therapy are available, upon request. The family therapy program includes a weeklong intensive program that is held every other week throughout the year wherein family members learn about life in recovery. CeDAR is a 12-step based facility with daily meetings available for various 12-step recovery programs. SMART Recovery is available as well.
The staff-to-client ratio is four-to-six with an average of 105 staff members at any given time. As this facility is attached to a hospital, there is an accessible and robust team of medical professionals available to clients with such credentials as MD, RN, BSN, MA, LPC, CAC III, PhD, LP, LAC, NCC, LMFT, MDiv and LADC.
Bonus Amenities
Additional offerings include meditation, art therapy, drum circles, the monthly speaker series “CeDAR Night Live,” a Sunday spirituality-based service “The Gathering” and movie nights.
A community room also is available and offers a place to sit and meet other residents and a fun locale to play board games and to share snacks in order to create a true sense of community.
Summary
Unlike other facilities, CeDAR focuses heavily on life after being a resident. Each resident meets with a team called Recovery Care Management Specialists to customize an aftercare plan that gives residents the confidence to step into the real world, soberly.
While clients are able to choose between the various recovery options while at CeDAR, he/she will never have to make that choice alone. And, whether learning about fitness or nutrition goals or just wanting a better understanding of life after sobriety, CeDAR has a team of professionals at the ready to help walk clients down this new, stronger path.
