What to look for in a prospective rehab facility and where to find it!

So you’ve taken the brave step, and admitted you need help for your substance abuse problem. Now it’s just a matter of finding the right treatment facility, but how do you go about that? It’s possible you’ve already begun your search, but you may be asking yourself, how can I trust this drug rehab?

Not every rehab center is the same, and not every addiction is caused by the same factors or affects people in the same way. Therefore, it’s important to know what to look for and what things to avoid when searching for a treatment program.

Too often you see stories about rehab scams, and unfortunately, there are numerous facilities that are not appropriately licensed, give false claims, and offer inadequate treatment services. Many in the drug rehab industry have chosen to make a profit over actually providing the treatment and support that so many people need.

Taking the time to learn as much as possible about the different types of addiction treatment centers available will help you make the right decision and help make your transition into rehab easier.

Licensing and Credentials

One of the most important things to do when searching for a treatment facility is to make sure it has the proper local, state and national credentials and licenses to operate. Every state has its own licensing agency and set of requirements for licensing. These agencies will be able to give you the licensing status of a treatment facility and tell you whether others have filed complaints in the past. The facility should have an excellent reputation, and offer services that are proven effective and backed by independent studies and research.

Equally as important should be the credentials of the treatment staff. All staff members should be highly trained, licensed and certified in the field of addiction treatment. Make sure the treatment center you choose employs professionals such as board-certified doctors, licensed therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and licensed behavioral therapists, among others.

Safety and Comfort

Look online for pictures and reviews from former patients. Many times, you’ll be able to make an informed decision based on how a place looks and what people are saying about the services offered there. You want to choose a facility that looks clean, has a good reputation, offers proven, effective treatment and is located in a safe area.

Treatment Services

Every person who seeks treatment for addiction has different needs, so therefore, the facility you are looking for should offer a wide range of programs. The treatment center you choose should provide inpatient rehabilitation, intensive outpatient programs, outpatient services, relapse prevention education, dual diagnosis treatment, and aftercare and sober living programs, among others.

You should receive a tailored treatment plan that can be adjusted according to your particular needs and as you progress through the program. Make sure it’s not the type of facility that provides the same “cookie cutter” program for everyone. Find a rehab center that takes a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, and that offers services such as individual and group counseling sessions conducted by certified and licensed therapists, as well as a variety of other services such as life skills courses, relapse prevention education, and aftercare support.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient or residential rehab facilities provide immersive addiction treatment while patients live there 24 hours a day. This type of treatment is especially effective when the program lasts more than 30 days. In fact, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), clients who receive treatment for at least 90 days have a better chance at long-term recovery.

The drug and alcohol treatment centers you look into should offer a variety of program lengths, including 30, 60 and 90 day programs. While some treatment facilities only offer programs that are less than 30 days, at Get Treatment, we understand that addiction is a complex disease that requires a longer length of time in order to manage and treat it effectively. If the treatment centers you find only offer shorter programs or seem to have a high turnover rate, then you will want to continue your search.

Detoxification Services

The first phase of inpatient drug treatment is often a period of detoxification that takes about 10 to 14 days, depending on the patient and drug of abuse. It’s important to make sure the rehab facility you choose offers a reputable medical detox program on-site that is conducted by a team of experienced, board-certified doctors and experienced nurses.

During medical detox, the substances you’re addicted to will slowly be removed from your body. This process helps to minimize symptoms associated with withdrawal and keeps you stable while under the supervision of healthcare professionals. As these symptoms can be severe, detox under medical supervision in an inpatient rehab facility provides the safest and most comfortable setting in which to begin your recovery.

The ultimate goal of medical detoxification is to address your physical addiction and prepare you for the next step of the rehabilitation process. The best rehabs offer medical detox services that are located on the premises, clean, and are supervised by experienced and licensed professionals.

Addiction treatment should never be a “one size fits all” approach. The medical detox staff should be able to create an initial treatment plan tailored to your individual needs, which gives you the best chance at lasting recovery.

Beyond Detox

Treating the psychological aspect of addiction is essential for a successful recovery. Treating the physical addiction alone will not work, and can easily lead to relapse. Emotional issues must also be addressed during rehab. Therefore, you should look for a treatment facility that provides a combination of medical, psychological, and peer support. It should utilize a number of evidence-based treatment modalities, and provide dual diagnosis treatment for patients who suffer from co-occurring disorders.

Outpatient Rehab Programs

A good rehab center will provide a number of different outpatient treatment options. Intensive outpatient programs, also known as IOPs, are designed to provide patients with a more intensive type of treatment, similar to the one received in a residential treatment setting. The main difference is that IOPs allow you to reside at home instead of the treatment center. An intake specialist will determine what type of program is best for you depending on several factors, such as the severity of your addiction, how long you’ve been addicted, your current health and your life commitments.

Outpatient programs vary in length, and typically require that you attend regular weekly sessions. Depending on your specific needs, you may need to attend daily 8-hour programs or you may only be required to spend a couple hours at the treatment center.

Outpatient rehabilitation utilizes many of the same treatment modalities used in inpatient care, such as individual and group therapy, medication-assisted treatment, support groups, relapse prevention education and life skills workshops.

It’s important to note that outpatient treatment is not for everyone. If you suffer from multiple addictions, have been addicted for a long period of time or have been diagnosed with both addiction and a mental health disorder, this type of program may not be suitable for you.

Specialized Treatment Programs

When looking for a reputable drug and alcohol rehab facility, it’s important to ask what types of specialized treatment programs are available. For example, you may be in search of a gender-specific rehab program that offers care for men or women only. These types of programs can help you focus on your recovery without distractions from the opposite sex, and help to address certain issues that are particular to your gender, such as trauma, sexual assault or family issues.

The best rehab centers will also offer holistic programs, which act as a supplement to traditional treatments, and focus on various natural therapies to promote sobriety and overall health.

Most importantly, you’ll want to ask if the rehab center offers programs that specialize in the treatment of your particular addiction. Whether you are addicted to opioids, alcohol, cocaine, prescription pills or other substances, the drug rehabs you look into need to provide therapy, counseling and programming that can be precisely tailored for your addiction.

Additionally, the staff members employed at the treatment center need to have extensive training and experience dealing with your addiction. Many drug rehab centers claim they can help you, but if they are unable to give you concrete answers to your questions, then you will need to look elsewhere.
