Introduction and Basic Services

Opened in 1967, Austin Recovery is the oldest chemical dependency treatment center in Central Texas. Austin Recovery offers exactly what the client needs: a hand to get out of their addiction and the tools to stay out. It offers residential treatment, outpatient treatment for adults and a family program for adults with small children with a focus on drug, alcohol and opioid addiction. The programming incorporates evidence-based practices, 12-step recovery and holistic treatment. It also facilitates detox and dual diagnosis support for individuals struggling with chemical dependency or co-occurring disorders. Full off-site childcare is available while the parent attends therapy and classes.

Facility and Meals

The facility features clean but fairly simple bedrooms with bunk beds for two people who share a bathroom. Men and women are in two different buildings. Family House’s living arrangements allow for mothers and children to live together. The center also provides off-site child care during the day and has a playground to use for all the children on the site. The family program is one of only three in the entire state of Texas, and the women and men who stay here can use state funding.

The men’s and women’s facilities have living rooms for relaxing and working on projects along with rec rooms for activities. Since it is a former ranch, the grounds are spacious and there is plenty of space to walk around the well kept area and reflect and work on themselves. Exercise is emphasized through all the programs at Austin Recovery.

The cafeteria is staffed by trained chefs who prepare a Mediterranean style spread for the guests three to four times a day. That includes a lot of lean proteins like fish and chicken, and a wide variety of vegetables. Meals are served as well as plenty of snacks. Dietary issues are easily accommodated whether it’s a preference for vegan or vegetarian, or just allergies. Caffeine and junk food are not permitted.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Whether residential or outpatient, each client first meets with a counselor who puts together an individual plan for the client and they adjust as they see fit.

Rooted in 12-step principles, Austin Recovery offers a 30 day short term treatment program for clients who need to get back on the wagon after a relapse. It is very successful for those who have attended rehab previously. It also provides a 90 day Journey program that offers a lot of support via heavy 12-step work, classes and therapy (one-on-one sessions with a counselor are available once or twice a week) for those who are ready to buckle down, commit to the program and change their lives.

If the client is in the residential program, he or she attends on and off-site meetings and classes from about 8am to 8pm. The classes range from basic life skills to parenting. Austin Recovery’s practical and straightforward approach to recovery works on preparing clients for rejoining the world sober, with an emphasis on the keys many addicts need to acquire to successfully build upon recovery: resumé writing, how to dress for an interview, make a doctor’s appointment, how to get food stamps and apply for welfare. In general, the team at Austin Recovery aims to prepare the client for moving on with life.

The outpatient program lasts six to eight weeks with three hour sessions three times a week, in addition to one hour of individual counseling. Outpatient groups meet from 6 to 9 pm and they are also required to go to off-site meetings. Clients in the outpatient program can pay on a sliding scale, and insurance is also accepted.

Therapeutic treatment in groups and individual sessions consists of CBT, DBT, REBT, experiential therapy and relapse prevention. Clients with dual diagnosis in residential treatment meet with a licensed nurse practitioner who can prescribe medication if needed. They also offer detox that includes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) such as Suboxone for opioid withdrawal.

Family programming is also available for the family members of clients in both group and individual counseling sessions, as well as counseling sessions with the client.

The staff at Austin Recovery has a good spread of LADCs, LCSWs and a psychiatric nurse practitioner. The ratio of staff to client is eight to one.

Unlike many treatment centers, Austin Recovery has many funding options available for those unable to pay. Clients in the outpatient program can pay on a sliding scale, and insurance is also accepted. Those in the residential program can either pay with insurance or pay the full rate in installments. There is no sliding scale for residential treatment.

Bonus Amenities

Austin Recovery has plenty of holistically minded offerings such as music and art therapy, as well as groups for meditation and yoga. There is also an on-site beach volleyball court, a basketball court, and nearby walking trails.

The facility also boasts a very active alumni program. The alumni program offers lots of activities for the sober minded alumni of Austin Recovery. Some events include a monthly MusiCares® Sober Jam, a kickball tournament against neighboring recovery groups, a potluck and more. There are alumni classes, lectures, links to recovery resources and more on the alumni website, which is free for all who choose to stay in touch.

Summary

With both residential and outpatient options, Austin Recovery offers a solid program of evidence-based therapy, peer support meetings and plenty of structure to get someone out of their old ways, into a new life and equipped with the tools to stay sober. The options for family support—from childfare to a full family program—are extensive, as are the recreational and holistic activities. Its robust alumni program is also a huge benefit for anyone wanting continued support at the completion of formal treatment. For the price, a person can’t beat Austin Recovery in terms of the quality and offerings for substance abuse and co-occurring disorder treatment.
