Knights Templar Cartel Members Forced To Eat Hearts of Children

The vile and heartbreaking initiation practice was ordered by former Knights Templar leader, Nazario Moreno, who was shot dead by police earlier this month.

Membership in the Knights Templar drug cartel in Mexico requires an initiation process that would make most people sick to their stomach, literally. Several detained gang members have told police that their initiation process including eating the hearts of children.

The hearts came from local kids who had been trapped for organ trafficking purposes, a practice ordered by former Knights Templar leader Nazario Moreno, who was shot dead by police earlier this month.

“At [an] initiation ceremony they used the organs, in this case the heart, and forced people going through this initiatory process to eat it,” said Alfredo Castillo, the federal government's envoy to Michoacán. “There are statements from some people who were present when Nazario Moreno El Chayo [The Rosary] came and told others, either as initiation or as part of a ritual: 'Today we are going to eat a person's heart.’”

The death of Moreno came as a surprise to many because the Mexican government had already reported him as being dead four years ago. Then-president Felipe Calderón reported that Moreno was killed by police after a two-day gun battle, but his body wasn’t found and many residents in Michoacán had reported sightings of him in recent years.

His confirmed death marked the second major coup against the reign of drug cartels in Mexico in recent weeks; last month, marines captured Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, widely considered to be the most powerful drug lord in the country, at his condo in the city of Mazatlán. U.S. officials are negotiating with Mexico to have him extradited to America to face trial.
