Colin Farrell Describes Sober Sex As "Terrifying"
The Irish actor was used to more casual, drunken encounters in dark rooms and toilets.
Colin Farrell has been sober for eight years, but the actor still considers his first time having sex without booze to be one of the most terrifying moments of his life. Farrell recently made the surprising admission in Elle magazine and said he wondered whether being sober would wreck his ability to be charming.
“I worried I wouldn’t be able to talk. I hadn’t uttered a word sober in about 15 years,” he said. “I made love to a woman about two and a half years after I got clean, and it was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. It was in the afternoon. The windows and the curtains were open. It was lovely, and, to be crass, it wasn't fucking ...but it was terrifying. Because I was just used to drunkenness and dark rooms and clubs and toilets and wherever."
Although life for Farrell these days consists of work and being a dad to his two sons, the actor admitted in 2012 that the birth of his first child in 2003, James, wasn’t enough for him to get clean. He told Details magazine that he chose to remain a “drug-addicted drunk” in the early stages of his son’s life. "I literally said, 'I'm not changing! I'm gonna be his friend!' Like a fucking 28-year-old drug-addicted drunk friend is exactly what my six-week-old son needs,” said Farrell. However, he now credits James with saving his life by making him realize he needed to change.
